ActivityTaught science at Dunheved College Lancashire before being appointed Headmaster of Coke College, Antigua. He was appointed director of the Marine Biological Association Laboratory UK at Plymouth in 1894 where he worked on studying the nervous system of Crustacea. He became secretary for the Marine Biological Association in 1895 and from 1902 was secretary to the council. He remained as director of the Laboratory until his retirement in 1936, having developed the laboratory into a leading centre for marine research. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1914 and was awarded the Society's Darwin medal in 1936. He was awarded the Linnean Society's gold medal in 1926 and the Agassiz medal for Oceanography in 1938. He was made a CBE in 1935. He remained in Plymouth after his retirement working on various scientific projects.
