Attended Madras College, St Andrews. Entered University of St Andrews 1853-1857. Studied medicine and surgery at Edinburgh University. Became a Doctor of Medicine 1860. Appointed Assistant Physician to Murray's Royal Asylum, Perth, specialising in mental disease. Held position of Medical Superintendent of Perth District Asylum, Murthly, 1863-1882. President of the Fifeshire Medical Association c1900. Accompanied G J Allman on dredging excursions in the Firth and Forth. Made excursions to the Channel Islands, the Shetlands and the Outer Hebrides. Travelled on the HMS 'Challenger' expedition 1872-1876, where he named and studied the Cephalodiscus; a problematic organism which had been rejected by other specialists. On returning home became a Professor of Natural History at St Andrews University. Established the first marine laboratory in Britain. Joined the Ray Society 1863. Fellow of the Royal Society 1877. Recipient of the Royal Medal 1899. Awarded the Linnean Medal 1924. President of the Ray Society 1913-1931
McIntosh's work on the Nemertine and Polychaete Worms was his most important contribution to zoology; successfully making out features in their anatomy. He was a life long friend of Ray Lankester. |
