ActivityMuseum staff. Appointed Assistant in Mineralogical Branch, 1843; Keeper 1851; renamed Mineralogical and Geological Branch, then Department, of which he became Keeper, in 1856. When the department divided in 1857, became Keeper of Department of Geology. Responsible for negotiating purchase of Archaeopteryx from Dr Karl Haberlein in 1861-62. Retired 1880.
Originally an entomologist (after training as an architect). Appointed museum curator at the Royal Institution at Liverpool in 1835. First curator of Zoological Society's museum 1836-1843. Examined Darwin's South American mice brought back with the HMS Beagle in 1836, recognizing nineteen new species and one new genus in February 1837.
President of the Entomological Society in 1849-50. Vice-president of the Zoological Society in 1862-3.
RelationshipsMarried Elizabeth Ann Griesbach 1834. Father of Charles Owen Waterhouse.
