Educated West Cornwall College, Penzance, 1909-1917, University College, Reading, 1917-1921, graduating (from London University) with 2nd class BSc Hons in Zoology and Board of Education teaching certificate. Taught science in schools for c4 years, continuing personal studies at NHM. 1925-1928 on Gilchrist research scholarship in Biology Dept of King's College for Women, working on larynx and hyoid of frogs. Work went towards DSc (London University, 1934), supervised by Charles Tate Regan. 1928 employed on temporary staff in the Director's Office as scientific assistant to Tate Regan (Director since 1927), working on deep sea fishes and African cichlid fishes. 1935 appointed to established staff as Assistant Keeper (transferred from Director's Office to Zoology 1937). Deputy Keeper 1958. Retired 1961. Continued working after retirement, several field trips, and two books published after 80. 1939 appointed by Colonial Office to survey of fish & fisheries on Lake Nyasa (Malawi) - results of 4 month survey published 1942. 1939-45 [and other years?] compiled annual Pisces section of Zoological Record. 1945 appointed to Fishery Advisory Committee to Secretary of State for the Colonies. 1947 invited by Nigerian government to join their Fishery Development Unit - 2 months in the field. Also served on councils of Freshwater Biological Association, Systematics Association, Institute of Biology, British Cichlid Council. Linnean medallist 1968; Fellow (Honoris causa), Linnean Society 1991; Honorary Foreign Member of American Society of Ichthyologists & Herpetologists 1946; DSc Honoris causa, University of Stirling 1986.
