| Activity | Museum Staff: Kinnear joined the staff of the Natural History Museum in 1920 as an Assistant in the Department of Zoology. In 1928 he was appointed Assistant Keeper. He was in charge of birds from 1936 to 1945 as Deputy Keeper. In 1945 he became Keeper of the Zoology Department. In 1947, the day after he attained the age of 65, the normal retiring age, he was appointed Director of the Museum and in 1948 was made a C.B. He retired in April 1950 and was knighted in June.
Kinnear was particularly interested in early Indian ornithologists (see his notes housed with Zoology Library manuscripts)
He was a voluntary assistant at the Royal Scottish Museum, Edinburgh (1905-1907) under W.Eagle Clarke. In November 1907 he became Officer-in-Charge of the Bombay Natural History Society's Museum and Assistant Editor of its Journal. He was a Committee member of the BOU (1925-1928 & 1941-1943), its Vice-President (1938-1940) and its President (1943-1948). He was Vice-Chairman of the British Ornithologists' Club (1933-1935), its Secretary (1940-1943) and Editor of its Bulletin (1925-1930). He was a member of the Council of the Zoological Society of London and its Vice-President, member of the Home Office Advisory Committee for the Protection of Birds, member of committees of the National Trust (1935-1957), Council member and Chairman of the BTO and member of the ICBP British Section (from 1935) and its Chairman (1947-1957), Vice-President of the Society for the Promotion of Nature Reserves (from 1947), member of committees of the Nature Conservancy from its establishment in 1949.. In his later years his address was 2 Burghley Road, Wimbledon, London SW19.
