Activity | As a young man he accompanied Canon H B Tristram on a collecting trip to Palestine and Syria. In 1865 he made a trip up the Amazon River, returning to England in 1869. The birds he collected on this trip included many new forms and formed the subject of a number of papers for the proceedings of the Zoological Society of London from 1866 - 1873. From 1875 - 1890 he served as curator of the Maidstone Museum and in 1891 he left England for Borneo where he took up the post of curator of the Brooks Museum, Kushing, Sarawak. He returned to England in 1897 to devote time to his literary work and was made a fellow of the Zoological Society. 1889 elected as aCorresponding fellow of the American Ornithologists Union |
