ActivityWorked with his father and brother in family company 'Whymper & Sons, wood engravers. 1860 began his career as an alpine climber. 1865 he climbed the Matterhorn. In 1867 and 1872 he visited Greenland and amassed a large collection of plant-remains which were given to the Geological Department of BM(NH). January 1880 climbed Chimborazo (20,498ft) and is credited as being the highest mountain climbed by any mountaineer at that time. 1901 - 1905 he explored and ascended the mountains of the 'Great Divide' in the Rockies.
