Activity1826 appointed Assistant Geologist on the Geological Survey. 1880 superintendant of maps and memoirs at the Geological Survey office and in 1893 he took charge of the whole office. 1887 he became editor of 'Geological Record'. 1872 joined the British Association and from 1872 - 1888 he held the post of secretary of the Geology Section. He was secretary for the committeee reporting on coastal erosion in England and Wales. Member of the councils of the Geological Society and the Geologist's Association. 1885 he was elected president of the Geologist's Society. 1888 chosen as secretary for the International Geological Congress, London.
He was elected a fellow of the Geological Society in 1862 and an Associate of the Institute of Civil Engineers 1874; and a fellow of the Royal Society in 1888.
