Activity1880 visited Scandinavia to study lower palaeozoic rocks with the help of a grant from the Worts Travelling Fund. 1886 he was appointed University Lecturer in Geology at Cambridge University. 1885 he was apppointed to the council of the Geological Society and also served as secretary, vice president and president. 1900 he was awarded the Lyell Medal and in 1914 he was awarded the Wollaston Medal of the Geological Society. He was elected to the Royal Society in 1891, served on its council from 1904 - 1906 and received the Royal Medal in 1930.
