ActivityTrained as a Solicitor but developed an interest from a young age in Violin making and the study of the hand and finger formation, subjects which he wrote a number of books on. In 1886 he was invited on an extended lecture tour in USA where he spoke on the suject of Cheirosophy. After he retired from his Solicitors practice in 1911 he began to study foramanifera on the Sussex coast as well as building a library for his collection of over 12,000 books. He published numerous studies on proto - zoology and on his death donated his foramanifera collection, considered to be one of the best in the world, to the British Museum.
