Activity | 1878 he became curator of Bristol Museum. 1879 professor of Geology and Zoology at University College, Bristol. 1883 professor of geology and mineralogy at Trinity College, Dublin. 1893 he was a member of a committee to look at the structure of coral islands. He was appointed Chair of Geology in Oxford University in 1897 a post which he held until 1936. 1892 he received the Bigsby Medal. 1889 elected a fellow of the Royal Society of London and received their Royal Medal in 1914. 1907 he was awarded the Geological society's Wollaston Medal, he was a member of the Geological Society in London for 61 years and president 1908 - 1910.
