| Activity | 1851 he moved to Plymouth to succeed his father in the family dental practice. He rose to be the leading member of the profession outside London, receiving the licence in dental surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1860. He was elected a member of the Odontological Society in 1856, and acted as its vice-president from 1860 to 1862. In 1885 he became the first provincial dentist to fill the office of president of that society. Furthermore, some four years earlier, he served as vice-president to the dental section of the international medical congress in London.
1848 he joined the British Association and during the 1869 he acted as vice-president of the Biological Section. In brought the 1877 meeting to Plymouth where he was vice-president. He was elected a member of the Plymouth Institution 1852 and was a member of its council from 1853 - 1883. He served as secretary from 1854 - 1860 and as president 1861 - 1862 and 1869 - 1870. He was a curator of the museum and editor of 'Transactions' 1869 - 1883.
He was also a founder of the Devonshire Association, senior general secretary in 1862 and president 1863.
He was elected a fellow of the Linnean Society 1854 but later resigned. 1861 he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society. 1862 he undertook some work for the Trustees of the British Museum. |
