Activity1875-1878 he was lecturer in Botany to the Royal Veterinary College. 1874 served as botanist and geologist on an expedition to Rodriguez Island. That year he also spent 7 weeks on the Island of Socotra, also in the Indian Ocean investigating its flora and geology. 1879 he obtained the regius chair of botany at Glasgow. He helped to found, in 1887, the Annals of Botany. Balfour left Glasgow in 1884 to become Sherardian Professor of Botany at Oxford. He returned to Edinburgh in 1888 as Professor of Botany, the Queen's Botanist in Scotland and Keeper of the Royal Botanic Garden,3 posts that had previously been held by his father.. He was created KBE in 1920.
