ActivityGraduated as an MD in 1847 and fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland 1844. Main interest was in Marine Zoology. Appointed professor of Botany at Dublin University 1854 and appointed regius professor of Natural History and Keeper of the Natural History Museum, Edinburgh in 1855. He was made a fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh 1856 and received their Brisbane Medal in Edinburgh 1877, The Cunningham Medal of the Royal Irish Academy 1878 and the Gold Medal of the Linnean Society 1896 for his work on describing the Hydroids brought back from the Challenger Expedition. He served on the council of the Royal Society from 1871 - 1873 and was president of the Linnean Society 1874 - 1883.
