Educated at Charterhouse, Eton and Trinity College, Oxford where he studied Classics 1914. Studies interrupted by outbreak of War. Served in France and Belgium where he was wounded and suffered shell shock 1916. Returned to Oxford University and studied zoology for the Honour School of Natural Science 1920-1922. Appointed assistant in Department of Zoology 1922, where he wrote and edited many of the museum publications. Assistant keeper (1st class) 1930; transferred 1939. Died from an illness 1942.

Monro devoted much of his working life studying Polychaete worms.
RelationshipsFather Alexander Monro, director of public instruction in the Indian Civil Service. Brother David Binning Monro (1836-1905), provost of Oriel College Oxford and Homeric scholar. Uncle General Sir Charles Monro, Government and commander in chief of Gibraltar. First marriage to Pamela Gartside Tipping 1917. They had one son. Second marriage to Shelia Mary Anderson. They had two sons.
