ActivityReceived PhD 1984; worked at CABI; appointed SSO in Department of Entomology 1 Feb 1982; promoted PSO 1 Jan 1985; promoted Deputy Keeper SPSO 2 Apr 1990; Acting Keeper 1991-Jan 1992; returned to full-time research 1999; retired 2007. Ian was a prominent researcher specialising in the taxonomy and general biology of parasitoid wasps. He wrote numerous papers and monographs on Ichneumonidae. He co-edited, with Paul Hanson, a book on Costa Rican Hymenoptera, another on Neotropical Hymenoptera in general, and a further volume, with Barry Bolton, that laid emphasis on the British Hymenoptera. He was also a great advocate and champion of revisionary taxonomy, and always conscious of local taxonomic needs - particularly in Costa Rica, where he carried out much of his work in recent years. He felt strongly that the results of his studies should also be published in the language of native users and went to great pains to achieve this end.
