Retired 1923. In Army 1914-1918, at end of War was acting Captain. Keen amateur photographer, worked in photographic studio, a small brick building, later basement of Whale Hall. Transferred to Directorate 1923 as the first Official Photographer until Feb 1936 when he retired. Known as 'Kipper' Herring.
