1892 donated his collection of 3000 geological specimens to Bradford Technical College. Editor of 'Mineralogical Magazine' 1901 - 1955 and of 'Mineralogical Abstracts' 1920 - 1955. He was president of the Mineralogical Society from 1936 - 1939 and foreign secretary from 1949 until his death in 1949. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1925. He was made a C.B.E in 1934 and awarded the Murchison Medal by the Geological Society in 1937. He was awarded the Roebling Medal of the Mineralogical Society of America in 1941 and was made an honorary member not only of the American society but also the German one.
