In August 1888 he accompanied an aeronaut named Simmons on a ballon flight intended to travel to Austria from the Danish Exhibition in London. The ballon crashed, Simmons was killed and Miers hospitalised for 6 weeks - a poem from his time in hospital is catalogued at DF/MIN/20/11/28.

Member of the Crystallogical Society which amalgamated with the Mineralogical Society in 1883. Served on the council since 1888, vice president 1901 - 1904 and president 1904 - 1909. He was editor of the society journal 1891 - 1900 and a trustee of the society from 1911 - 1940
