Activity | Born in Glasgow, 15 Aug 1844. Tring correspondent. Went to Constantinople [Istanbul] when small, studied medicine at various Swiss Universities, practised medicine at Florence until 1886 but also worked on fossil mammals. Influenced by palaeontologist Prof Rutimeyer at Basel. Worked at NHM from 1893 until 1908. Went to Madagascar for 2 years during 1890's, funded by Royal Society. 1900 interested in Okapi; 1906 granted civil list pension; 1908 retired to Bastia, Corsica. Died in Muncih, March 1923 |
