Activity	Called to the bar in 1822. Elected secretary of the Geological Society of London 1823, he resigned the post in 1826 and was appointed foreign secretary instead, he was also elected as a fellow of the royal society in 1826. He wrote for the tory Quarterly Review from 1825 - 1827. He was apppointed professor of Geology at Kings College, London 1831. Awarded the royal medal of the royal society in 1836. President of the Geological Society 1835 - 7. He was knighted in 1848 and served on the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851. He served a second term as president of the Geological Society 1849 - 51. He was president of the British Association in 1864 and made a baronet that year. He was awarded the Geological Societys Wollaston Medal in 1866
