Lichens
One of the founders of the British Lichen Society in 1958, and editor of its journal The Lichenologist until 1977. Founding member, acting treasurer and and first president of the International Association for Lichenology. Founder member of charity Plantlife.
James surveyed Stonehenge and produced separtate species lists for each of the 82 stones that make up the monument.
Awarded Acharius Medal for lifetime achievements in lichenology 1992.
