| Activity | Emigrated to South Africa in 1879 where he initially taught French at the South African College and the Diocesan College, Cape Town. In 1882, began working at the South African Museum, as a volunteer, on beetles. He joined the Museum staff in 1884 as scientific assistant. In 1895 he was put in charge of Invertebrate Collection, and was the effective head of Entomology for 40 years. In 1896 he became Assistant Director of the South African Museum, and was appointed Director in 1906. In the same year he started lecturing in forest entomology at the S.A. College and was awarded a doctorate in Natural Sciences by the University of the Cape of Good Hope. He married Bertha Marcellis in 1892. |
