AdminHistoryThe Histology and Preservation Section was created by the Keeper of Zoology in 1966. It was formed by the merger of the Histology laboratory (under Dr Hedley) and the central basement laboratory (under Dr Wright). The Histology and Preservation Section was responsible for all the histology carried out in the Department of Zoology and also advised and worked for the Entomology, Palaeontology and Botany Departments. The facilities available included paraffin wax, celloidin and freezing techniques. The Section also investigated the preservation of biological material and developed freeze drying of entire biological specimens.

The Comparative Anatomy Collection came originally from the Index or Primary Collections displayed in the Central Hall of the Museum (also known as the 'Typical Museum'), later known as the Exhibited Systematic Series and then as the Introductory Morphological Collections.
