DescriptionBurton joined the Museum staff in 1967 and obtained his PhD in 1969, later published as a book. He was Scientific Officer in Bird Section/Sub-department of Ornithology 1967 to 1988.

He embarked on a Ph.D. project concerning shorebird feeding methods, and the anatomy of the feeding apparatus (awarded PhD, University of London, July 1969). He was a Senior Scientific Officer on the Bird Section staff from 1st September 1967, transferring to Tring with the bird collections in 1971 and becoming Principal Scientific Officer from 1st December 1971. He took part in several expeditions - to Panama, Guyana, Sarawak and elsewhere. He was in charge of the anatomical collections until taking early retirement at the end of September 1988. He is the author and/or illustrator of several books and papers. Among them Anatomical specimens of birds in the collections of the British Museum (Natural History) in Bulletin British Museum (Natural History), Zoology 34(4) 1979 which he produced with Jenny Blandamer. His PhD dissertation was published by the Museum as a book.
