Ian joined the Mollusca Section of the Museum in 1955 as Senior Scientific Officer. He transferred to the Bird Section in 1961 as Principal Scientific Officer, replacing R.W. Sims. His particular interest was systematics, particularly of Pachycephala (Whistlers) - a study which he started at Oxford- see Bull.BMNH Zool. 4(4) 1956.. He transferred to Tring with the bird collections in 1971 and, in 1976, took over responsibility as Head of the Sub-department of Ornithology from Dr D.W. Snow. He retired in 1985. |
