TitleWalters, Michael P: Papers and Correspondence
DescriptionMichael Patrick Walters (b. 1942)
Michael joined the Bird Section staff at South Kensington in 1970 and transferred to Tring in 1972, slightly later than other members of staff. He worked mainly on the egg collections as a Scientific Officer. He retired in 2003 but continued for a couple of years as Emeritus Fellow of the Bird Group working on type specimens before finally leaving the museum in 2005 for his home in Northern Ireland. He was the author of Eyewitness Handbook: Birds Eggs (1994), The Complete Birds of the World (1980), A Concise History of Ornithology (2003) and, with A.G. Knox, of Extinct and endangered birds in the collections of the Natural History Museum (1994), and numerous other papers.

Letters relating to skin loans for which Michael was responsible for several years have been removed and placed with the general Bird Group files, 1980 (DF230).

Most of his files of research papers and also internal museum memoranda have been placed with Bird Group Archives although many Archive files contain some external correspondence. Files containing research on eggs or relating to specific substantial egg collections have been placed in Egg Collection Archives. There is much overlap between the categories.

Michael also worked on Type specimens; letters concerning these and other aspects of personal research on skins have been left here.
