Description | 3 letters from Stanley Kemp, 'Discovery' Committee, Colonial Office, Downing Street, London SW1, enclosing a reply from Hinton. The Discovery Committee organised the exploratory expeditions in the boat Discovery. [The Discovery Committee was founded in 1923 under the Colonial Office, in 1925 it began a scientific survey of the antartic by establishing a marine biological station at Grytviken in South Georgia, in 1949 it was reconstituted under the Admiralty as the National Institute of Oceanography. The name comes from its first research ship which was Captain Scott's old Discovery (from 1910) refitted. Her place was taken in 1929 by Discovery II. since 1926 the Committee also had a small ship the William Scoresby designed for carrying out experiments in marking whales.]
