TitleArthur Hopwood and Clive Forster Cooper collecting scrap metal
DescriptionThese two photographs [93 & 94] appeared in the August 1940 edition of Tin Hat.

Arthur Hopwood, Assistant Keeper of Geology, was appointed Salvage Officer in 1940. Clive Forster-Cooper was the Director of the Museum. The Salvage Officer’s remit – part of a national drive to collect anything that could be of use for the war effort – included collecting scrap iron, and the two men apparently went round the Museum collecting pieces of shrapnel after bombing raids. In July 1940 it was reported that scrap metal to the value of £3 15s had been sold off to the Kensington Salvage Department. The scrap iron salvage scheme included such items as old typewriters and, from this picture, possibly the metal hangings from the mounted antelope heads. Hopwood’s assiduity in his role was mocked gently in Tin Hat, which pointed out that he had not yet collected all the Museum keys and the hooks on which they hung.
