TitleCorrespondence and papers of Antony Sutcliffe
DescriptionAnthony Sutcliffe was born in 1927 and was appointed as a temporary scientific officer in the Department of Palaeontology in 1956. In 1957 he became the curator of fossil mammals, a position he occupied until his retirement in 1987. He was known for excavating bone caves, especially in South Devon and pioneering work in taphonomy - the study of the decay and burial of organic remains - in both tropical and arctic environments.

His publications include 'On theTrack of Ice Age Mammals'.

Sutcliffe spent much of retirement in active work for the Pengelly Cave Studies Trust, and edited their journal, 'Studies in Spelology.'

His papers include research notes for publications and conference papers, correspondence and papers relating to his work for the Pengelly Cave Studies Trust and editorship of Studies in Spelology, and an series of correspondence files arranged A-Z by person, with a further series of correspondence and papers arranged A-Z by subject.
