TitleWoodward, Henry to Hawkins, Herbert Leader: letter
Description1 letter from Henry Woodward to [?] Hoskins[?] re sending Hoskins's manuscripts of 'Girdle of Discides' to printers, and thanking him with a gift of a trilobite, found in Dudley (Wenlock limestone)

Transcribed as follows:

p.1
Dear HL Hawkins
I am committing your fifth-
MS ("Girdle of Discides") to the Printer,
-& have already sent the drawings
for plate XXV 1 to the Photo-Ingraver.
How I am to reward you for your great
industry & skill in delineating their very
beautiful structures, & describing them in
such eloquent & well-chosen sentences I
am at a loss to determine. Not being
in the fighting line, I cannot send
you a Hun's helmet or breastplate
but I think it should be decorative

1/ not "the gidle of Venus", but still very beautiful

p.2
& some form of armature of Nature.
Perhaps [C]alym[e]ne Blum[e]nbachii
from Dudley (Wenlock Limestone), which
I possess, & love very dearly, would best
express my thanks. So I send it
& beg you to accept it as a
"Mascot" from an old friend
& never to part with it.
& so I bid you hastily farewell
from Yours sincerely
Henry Woodward
