DescriptionIncludes Office of Works offering four 5 ton motor lorries for removal of specimens to Tring. Staff sent on Incendiary Bomb School Course. Memoranda, July 1939, 'Instructions have been received that in view of the possibility of an outbreak of war members of the staff would be will advised to provide themselves individually with an emergency ration (perhaps a small tin of meat or fish, some biscuits and chocolate) which they would keep at the Museum for consumption in the event of a breakdown of food supplies and facilities for getting to their homes'

Also includes January 1938 air raid precautions. 'These measures are not being considered because of any belief that war is imminent, but because the risk of attack from the air, however remote it may be, is a risk that cannot be ignored and because preparations against it cannot be made on the spur of the moment, but must be carried out, if they are to be effective, in time of peace'. Details that the Government would not be providing blackout facilities for Museums.

13 March 1939: from Office of Works 'I now feel that, in comparison with the other Museums, we must definitely suggest to you that your Category A material should be cut down, if possible to a quarter'.
