Description | Professor Richard ('Dick') Vane-Wright was born in 1949. In 1961 he was appointed as a scientific assistant in the entomology department of the Natural History Museum. In 1963 he left to study for a BSc in Zoology at University College London, graduating with a 1st class honours in 1967. From 1967-1984 he was Head of Lepidoptera: Rhopalocera Section at the museum. From 1984-1990 he was Deputy Head of the Entomology Department. From 1990-1997 he was the founder and Head of the Biogeography & Conservation Laboratory at the museum. From 1998β2004 he was the Keeper of Entomology. He retired in 2004 and has since been a scientific associate of the museum. He was awarded an honorary doctorate in science from the University of Copenhagen in 2003. From 2005-2008 he was a Fellow of the UK National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts. From 2007 onwards he has been the honorary professor of taxonomy for the Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology at the University of Kent. An expert on tropical butterflies and butterfly systematics.
