Description | The first of the Corporate Plans, produced under the directorship of Ron Hedley, was intended to provide a framework for Trustees and management to review and clarify policies and plans, as well as to satisfy the requirements of the Department of Education and Science (DES) and the Advisory Board for the Research Councils (ABRC). The second, in 1988, was produced at the request of the Office of Arts and Libraries (OAL). The Corporate Plans were produced annually until 2001, and subsequently in alternate years to reflect the funding cycle of the government. Written on behalf of the Museum Trustees to communicate their intentions to staff and peer institutions, and to demonstrate to the relevant government department (DCMS) how the Museum's work fits in with their objectives, the Corporate Plans set out the key objectives and strategies, progress and financial plans of the Museum for a five-year period. The Plans cover areas of activity such as curation, research, exhibitions, capital investment, admission charging, organisation, building management, and staffing.
Due to a lack of capital investment, a complete reassessment of the Museum's activities, audiences and priorities was undertaken during 1989-1990, which resulted in the total restructuring set out in the 1990-1995 Corporate Plan.
The Business Statements provide a statement of the Museum's position in the context of the objectives set out in the Corporate Plan.
