TitleRoyal Botanic Gardens, Kew: Morton Agreement on division of responsibilities
DescriptionIn 1961, a division of responsibilities was accepted between the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and the Botany Department of the Museum. by this means duplication in taxonomic research, in the curation of botanical collections and in the acquisition of specimens was avoided. Broadly it was agreed that Kew would be responsible for enquiries and investigations on the vascular plants of Asia, South America, Australasia and the Islands of the Pacific, and most of Africa, and with few exceptions, would incorporate specimens from those regions into its herbarium collections. The museum would deal similarly with the vascular plants of Europe, North West Africa, North America, Costa Rica and the West Indies, and the Arctic and Antartic Regions. In addition it was decided that the Museum would be responsible for taxonomic work and enquiries on Bryophyta, Algae and Lichens, and Kew would be responsible for Fungi, Gymnospermae, Orchidaceae and Gramineae.
