| Description | Includes correspondence, manuscripts, photographic material, sketches, drawings, field notes and lists relating to diatoms. Robert Ross was the first member of the Department to specialise in diatoms, and was assisted from 1951 by Patricia Sims. Prior to 1936 diatoms were part of the Alga Section, under the care of Gepp and then Tandy.
Ross significantly contributed to research progress on classification, taxonomy and nomenclature of diatoms, most of which material can be found at: DF BOT/422/1/2/11, as well as when reviewing and advising on draft Manuscripts and research corresponded to him. A facsimile in German of MS: Schmidt, A. (0) (1874-1959). Atlas der Diatomaceen-Kunde, von Adolf Schmidt, continued by Martin Schmidt, Friedrich Fricke, Heinrich Heiden, Otto Muller, Friedrich Hustedt. Reprint 1984, Koeltz Scientific Books, Konigstein, 480 plates, has been disposed of from this archive to conserve storage capacity.
