Description | Correspondence and memos about the Whale Hall and display of whale specimens. Includes letter from Edward Wickham, Wexford, Ireland, to the Secretary of the Natural History History Museum, London, 23 April 1934. Wickham was the boatman who 'captured' the Blue Whale in Wexford, Ireland. This specimen was displayed in the Whale Hall from 1934, until it was moved to the Central Hall in 2017 and named 'Hope'. The letter reads: "Dear Sir, A cutting has been sent to me, describing the erection of the skeleton of a whale, which was captured by me in March 1892. this naturally interested me after that lapse of years. Would it be asking too much of you, to send me a photograph of the skeleton erected, I had a photo, of the animal just after its capture, but I have changed about so much since the it got lost. No trace now remains of the place where Mr [E] Gerrard dissicted it; my home was there but 8 years ago the whole sandy [?] was washed away. Thanking you in anticipation, and trusting I am not troubling you too much. Yours Faithfully E. Wickham" |
