Title8mm, 16mm, 35mm films
DescriptionThe majority of these films are in 16mm format. According to the catalogue comments the films appear to vary markedly in the quality of the editing and viewing. Some are complete films, others are short sequences. There is duplication of film footage. The subject matter is diverse covering many aspects of locust biology (from egg laying to adult behaviour including swarming) and control (including ground-based methods and aerial spraying). Films have been made both in the laboratory and in the field. Additionally there are scenes showing locations and people. Several of the films were professionally made, some for television. Many of the films are documentary records of locust activity and control. Other subjects covered include termites, armyworm, quelea and weather. 64 films have been catalogued including:
1. The Ruthless One by Shell Film Unit UK (1956) (cat. no. 2).
2. Teeth of the Wind by World Wide Pictures (1953) (cat. no. 4).
3. The Brown Locust and its Control in South Africa by Film Services, Dept. of Education and Arts (undated) (cat. no. 9).
4. The Rival World by Shell Film Unit (1955) (cat. no. 15).
5. Red Locust: Work of I.R.L.C.S. by Anti-Locust Research Centre (1962) (cat. no. 24).
6. Anti-Locust Research by Pathe Pictorial (undated) (cat. no. 28).
7. Horizon: The Year of the Locust by BBC TV (1969) (cat. no. 30).
8. Castles of Clay by Anglia TV (1978) (cat. no. 49).
9. Life in the Balance by ICI/Millbank Films (1970s?) (cat. no. 55).
10. Health and Harvest by Centre for Overseas Pest Research (1975) (cat. no. 56).

Note: There are 10 16mm super-X cine-films of locusts dated 1954-55 (formerly in the filing cabinet D drawer 4) with the aerofilms (AL/12/5).
