| Description | Little bird collecting had been done in Austrlia prior to 1960 which J.D. Macdonald drew the atention of Harold Hall to. What resulted was 5 expeditions to Australia to fill this gap from 1961-1968.
1st expedition (Nov.1962-June 1963): Members included J.D Macdonald (leader) and his wife, G.S Cowles and P.R. Colston (Bird Room), A.R. McEvey (Melbourne Museum), W.G. Middleton (Forest Comm., Victoria), R. Boswell (Melbourne Museum) and R. Lossin (Sydney Museum). Visted all state capitals, Perth, Melbourne Victoria, New South Wales and Southern Queensland where a new species of babbler was discovered.
2nd expedition (March-August 1964): Members included I.C.J Galbraith (leader) and his wife, S.A. Parker (Bird Room), T. Anderson (Taxiderm fron Tasmania) R. Pink and I. McAllum (two amateur ornithologists from Victoria). Visited northern Queensland with camps on the Gulf and along the eastern coast.
3rd expedition (March-Sept 1965): B.P. Hall (leader), D. Goodwin and G.S. Cowles (Bird Room), J.E. Thomas (friend of Mrs Hall as cook), C.D.B Thomas and D.G. Nicholls (two naturalists from Victoria), Gerald Lathbury (member of Bird Exploration Fund Committee), D.L. Serventy (C.S.I.R.O Perth) and his assistant A. Mathews. Visitedinterior of South and Western Australia.
4th expedition (March-July 1966): C.J.O Harrison (leader), and his wife, P.R. Colston (Bird Room), R.Dear (naturalist from Perth). Visited 'southwest corner' and localities in western part of the State.
5th expedition (April-Dec 1968): B.D. McDonald Booth (leader), D. Freeman and C. Frith (Bird Room), A. Hiller (taxidermist from Sydney Zoo), H. Butler (collector from Perth), R. Whistler (naturaist from London). Visited Kimberleys in Western Australia and Arnhemland Northern Territory.
Results: 6,500 birds collected altogether of which 4,800 were made into skins, 900 skeletons and remainder preserved in spirir. |
