| Description | The earliest letters in this series date from well before the founding of the department in 1856, while recent correspondence is still accruing through the Modern Record Store. Thirteen keepers are represented so far, together with many other members of the department. The collection deals with departmental administration, accessions to the collection, general zoological and curatorial topics, and the research interests of successive keepers.
The series consists of bound letterbooks (DF200/1-52, 144-146), bundles of loose letters (DF200/63-72, 97-117) and letters in files (DF200/73-96, 118-143, 151-213). The files include letters arranged alphabetically by writer with a register on the cover (DF200/73-96), files relating to an individual writer (DF200/118-143) and subject files (DF200/118-143, 157-213). DF200/1-72 consist of incoming letters only; DF200/73-143 contain both incoming and outgoing letters.
There are occasional gaps in the page numbering within volumes. Where the physical volume contained any information to explain the gaps, there is an entry in CALM transcribing that information, but when there is no information, there is no entry for the missing pages. Additionally, some index cards exist for letters that cannot be found in the volume the card indicates; these have been given dummy entries as 'x/1000', where x is the volume number indicated by the index card, and the term 'NOT FOUND' after the author in the title line. |

DF204 contains copies of outgoing letters for 1909-1921. DF205 contains many of the Keeper's communications with the Director and trustees. |
