Description | The growing collections and study of entomological species acquired by the Museum developed a need for the creation of new departments and and staff appointments from the Entomological department. The World Wars prompted a need for research and examination into the effects of particular insects which affected the economy and societal sanitation, through hindering the development of agriculture, introducing and spreading disease, and propagating food and clothing degradation., for example. Frederick Laing was appointed particularly to respond to enquiries relating to these subjects, Alfred Westen McKenny Hughes also took enquiries from the public and public health authorities from 1931 to 1955.
