The Unprotected

Karine AignerPhotojournalist Story Award

For some people in the USA, hunting wildlife is a pastime.

In Texas, while there are strict regulations covering ‘game’ species, certain predators such as bobcats, mountain lions and coyotes have no protection and can be killed at any time and by any means. In this portfolio, Karine delves deep into the contests and festivals that celebrate the killing of these unprotected and maligned species, exploring their relationship with humans. Editor and Chair of the Jury, Kathy Moran notes ‘these are hard images to look at, difficult behaviour to fathom and incredibly challenging photographs to access and make. Exposing the cruelty and waste of predator, or ‘vermin’, hunts is a critical step towards the conservation of these species and a greater understanding of the role that they play within their ecosystems.’
