Britta Springler (Germany) illuminates the spores of a parasol mushroom swirling in the breeze.
Britta is passionate about showcasing the beauty of nature right on her doorstep. Working at night, she backlit this mushroom with a torch to highlight the myriad spores cascading from its gills.
Sugars secreted at the base of each spore draw water from the air to form a tiny droplet. When this merges with a film of water on the spore surface, the spore’s centre of mass shifts, launching it from the gill.

Britta took up photography as a hobby after her two grown-up children left home. It took many hours of practice until she understood the interplay of ISO, shutter speed and aperture. She started pursuing the hobby seriously and attended workshops and then began learning image editing. Britta became a full member of the German Society for Photography in 2023 and participated in a competition for the first time. She really enjoys attending workshops to have peace and quiet to photograph and to exchange ideas with fellow photographers.
Help us harness the power of photography to advance scientific knowledge, spread awareness of important issues and nurture a global love for nature.
