Jamie Smart (UK) frames a field grasshopper against a backdrop of soft lines of grass, which hint at its hiding place.
Jamie was up and out as the sun began to break through the autumn mist. “The light was just perfect,” she says.
Acting quickly, she gently drew back a few stems to get a clear view of the grasshopper without disturbing it.
The field grasshopper is small and widespread. Like most grasshoppers, it has short antennae and powerful hind legs – ideal for jumping.
When rubbed against its wings, the legs produce characteristic, intermittent chirps. Other grasshoppers detect the chirps through sensory organs on their abdomens.
