Alberto Román Gómez (Spain) observes a European stonechat tirelessly hunting invertebrates to feed its young.
Alberto watched this stonechat, his camera poised through an open car window.
He framed his portrait around a purple milk thistle and waited for the moment the small bird returned with a caterpillar.
It gave a backward glance to check for predators before delivering the meal to its offspring.
Stonechats prefer open habitats where they can perch and look out for insects. They build their softly lined nests in low, dense vegetation and incubate the eggs for 13–14 days. Both parents feed the chicks.

Spain
Alberto was born in Ubrique in Spain, a town surrounded by natural parks. Since he was about four years old, he’s accompanied his father on outings to the countryside. This, together with a small bird guide he had at home, soon sparked his interest in photography and nature. In 2022, Alberto acquired his first mirrorless camera. He quickly learned to handle it with ease and entered several international photography competitions.
Help us harness the power of photography to advance scientific knowledge, spread awareness of important issues and nurture a global love for nature.
