Stefan Gerrits (Finland) finds a gap in the misty curtain near the falls of Skógafoss to reveal nesting northern fulmars.
There was a strong, blustery wind on the day Stefan visited Skógafoss. This created a constant veil of spray that hid the birds from view and coated his camera lens with fine water droplets.
Eventually, enough gaps appeared in the mist to enable him to photograph this scene.
The northern fulmars at Skógafoss fly across the 60-metre-high (197-foot) waterfall to nest in the nearby cliffs.
Fulmars are widespread across northern latitudes. In Europe, populations have been declining since the mid-1980s.

Stefan is drawn to cold, Arctic-like landscapes, where snow plays a key role in his compositions. He uses it to create high-key, minimalistic images that highlight the beauty of wildlife within its environment. In recent years, he’s started organising photo tours to some of his favourite Arctic destinations, including Iceland, northern Finland and Norway, sharing his passion for photography and the wild landscapes he loves.
Help us harness the power of photography to advance scientific knowledge, spread awareness of important issues and nurture a global love for nature.
