Nick Kanakis (USA) watches as a diamondback water snake slowly swallows an American bullfrog.
Nick often sees both of these species while night-hiking, but rarely together.
He used a diffused flash. This illuminated the frog’s burnished brass colouring and its partly raised translucent third eyelid without disturbing the snake.
Diamondback water snakes are often spotted hanging from branches over water, hunting for fish and frogs.
Bullfrogs are North America’s largest native frog. They’ve been introduced to many parts of the world.

Nick is a wildlife photographer and ecologist. His love for the under-appreciated fuels his work, and he aims to ignite this same passion for a wide audience, bringing them into the lives of wildlife – particularly amphibians, insects and reptiles – through ethical photography. Nick believes that powerful images can inspire admiration from those who once feared often misunderstood animals and give people a new respect for more familiar feathered inhabitants.
Help us harness the power of photography to advance scientific knowledge, spread awareness of important issues and nurture a global love for nature.
