Jack Zhi (USA) records the moment a falcon hooks its talon into a pelican’s pouch and tugs it skywards.
Jack had been watching this peregrine falcon for a while. He’d seen it attack gulls, ospreys and eagles that ventured too close to its nest on a nearby cliff ledge.
Jack was watching from the beach below when a pelican made the same mistake. He tracked the action with a long lens. Fortunately, the pelican got the message and retreated.
During the breeding season, female peregrine falcons are protective of their young, attacking anything that comes near the nest.
Brown pelicans are one of California’s largest seabirds, but they will never outmanoeuvre an agile aerial predator like a peregrine falcon.

Jack is a solution architect working in the cloud computing space. He’s been photographing birds for seven years. After moving to California from the Midwest, he found the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary, which soon became his own sanctuary. He found himself taking walks there all the time. Seeing so many beautiful birds, it wasn’t long before he picked up a camera and started to photograph these amazing creatures.
