Liwia Pawłowska (Poland) watches as a relaxed common whitethroat is gently held by a bird ringer.
Liwia is fascinated by bird ringing and has been photographing ringing sessions since she was nine. She says that she hopes her photograph “helps others to get to know this topic better”.
Volunteers can help trained staff at bird ringing sessions. Each bird is given a ring on its leg as an individual identifier. The bird’s length, sex, condition and age are recorded.
The data helps scientists monitor populations and track migratory patterns, which can help with conservation efforts.

Liwia has been taking photographs since she was nine years old when she bought her first camera. She loves observing birds and their behaviour in nature as well as capturing other animals, plants, people, monuments and still life in her photographs. For four years Liwia’s had the opportunity to participate in bird ringing in her local area, which brings her immense joy. She also enjoys school theatre, cycling, stand-up paddleboarding and hiking with her family.
Help us harness the power of photography to advance scientific knowledge, spread awareness of important issues and nurture a global love for nature.
