Fortunato Gatto (Italy) comes across a gnarled old birch tree, adorned with pale ‘old man’s beard’ lichens.
Fortunato often visits the Glen Affric ancient pinewoods alone to lose himself in its intricate, chaotic, timeless beauty. The pale ‘old man’s beard’ lichens suggest that it’s an area with little air pollution.
Photographer, Cinematographer and Competition Judge Luciano Candisani felt that “this image is a beautiful example of how the good positioning of elements in a composition can add dynamism even to an aesthetic scene. The colours are beautiful, and the atmosphere is very interesting, but it’s the diagonal branch that directs the eye into the beautiful image.”
The pinewoods of Glen Affric in the highlands of Scotland are home to the highest concentration of native trees in the UK, making it a vital ecosystem. Analysis of pollen preserved in the layered sediments shows that the forest has stood here for at least 8,300 years.

Born in Italy, Fortunato took a leap of faith in 2007 and relocated to Scotland to follow his ever-growing passion for wild landscapes and unspoilt nature. The stunning surroundings, his fearless approach to the rugged weather conditions and his persistence in being willing to learn and improve, helped him become an advocate of the beauty of nature. To date, Fortunato has portrayed Scotland and many other wild territories in his own unique way, gaining worldwide awards and recognitions, publications and media space.
